December 01, (THEWILL) – Mercedes driver George Russell clinched pole position at the Qatar Grand Prix after stewards penalised Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with a one-place grid drop.
The penalty came following an investigation into an incident during qualifying that Verstappen described as complicated, resulting in his initial pole position being rescinded.
McLaren strengthened their constructors’ championship position by qualifying both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in third and fourth positions respectively.
The team now leads Ferrari by 30 points, putting them on the brink of potentially winning their first constructors’ title in 26 years, a significant milestone for the British racing team.
Lewis Hamilton secured sixth place on the grid for Mercedes, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start fifth.
The qualifying session saw Red Bull make extensive changes to their car setup after Verstappen’s disappointing eighth-place finish in the sprint race, with team principal Christian Horner confirming they adjusted “pretty much everything” to improve performance.
The stewards’ investigation revealed a unique scenario where Verstappen was moving slowly during a cool-down lap when Russell approached from behind.
Their statement noted that had Russell been on a push lap, the penalty would have likely been more severe, but they considered Russell’s clear visibility of Verstappen in their decision-making process.
The Grand Prix promises intense competition, with multiple teams showing strong performance potential.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was summoned to the stewards for an unsafe garage release, resulting in a €5,000 fine, adding another layer of complexity to the weekend’s events.
