June 14, (THEWILL) – Leeds United are facing charges of misconduct following the unruly behaviour exhibited by their supporters, during an English Premier League home match against Brighton back in March.
The England Football Association has accused the home fans in the Elland Road crowd of employing language that was deemed “improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting with reference to sexual orientation” during the first half of the game.
A spokesperson from the FA stated, “Leeds have been charged with misconduct in relation to an incident concerning crowd control during their Premier League encounter against Brighton on Saturday, March 11. The allegation suggests that the club failed to ensure proper conduct among their spectators, supporters, and those claiming to be associated with the club, specifically in the 20th minute, where the use of inappropriate words or behaviour pertaining to sexual orientation occurred.”
Leeds have been given until Wednesday, June 21, to provide a formal response to the charges. Despite managing to secure two equalisers through goals from Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison, Leeds United’s 2-2 draw with Brighton proved insufficient to lift them out of the relegation zone. Consequently, the team suffered relegation to the Sky Bet Championship at the end of the season.
