June 14, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion have unveiled the capture of James Milner, as the veteran midfielder joins the club on a free transfer from Liverpool.
The former England international has agreed to a one-year contract at the Amex Stadium, which includes the option for an additional 12 months. Manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed his delight at the signing: “I’m very glad to welcome James to Brighton. He’s an excellent addition for us and I’m sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level.”
Milner, who amassed 61 international caps between 2009 and 2016, commenced his career at Leeds United and has since played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Manchester City. During his distinguished eight-year tenure at Anfield, the 37-year-old won several major honours, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.
With his Reds contract set to expire on June 30, Milner will join Brighton, infusing valuable experience into De Zerbi’s squad as they prepare for their inaugural Europa League campaign. Brighton’s technical director, David Weir, lauded Milner’s exceptional track record, saying: “His experience speaks for itself with the amount of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career. These games include European competition, which will be of huge value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe.”
Milner, currently ranked third in the all-time EPL appearances list with 619, behind Gareth Barry (652) and Ryan Giggs (632), will be the Seagulls’ second summer signing, following the record-breaking acquisition of Brazilian forward Joao Pedro from Watford.
