June 28, (THEWILL) – The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, are set to receive a special farewell dinner from the Nigeria Football Federation before they embark on their journey to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The event, which will take place on Saturday, July 1, at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Abuja, will be attended by notable members of the NFF Executive Committee. It serves as a gesture of recognition and support for the team as they prepare to represent the nation on the global stage.
After the farewell dinner, the Super Falcons, led by coach Randy Waldrum, will proceed to a 15-day final training camp in Australia. This camp will serve as their last phase of preparation before the Women’s World Cup commences on July 20. With this being Nigeria’s ninth appearance in the premier women’s football tournament, the team finds itself placed in Group B, alongside formidable opponents such as Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.
Their campaign kicks off on July 21 against Canada at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. They will then face the Matildas of Australia on July 27 at Lang Park in Brisbane before returning to Melbourne for their final group-stage match against Ireland. The Super Falcons will rely on the skills and abilities of their star players, including Barcelona’s Asisat Oshoala, Atletico Madrid’s Rasheedat Ajibade, and China-based striker Desire Oparanozie, among others, in their quest to make a lasting impression at the World Cup.
