SAN FRANCISCO, December 13, (THEWILL) – Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have fired their manager Lucien Favre following a 5-1 thrashing by newly-promoted Stuttgart on Saturday at their own Signal-Iduna-Park grounds.
Considered favourably as title contenders ahead of the season, Dortmund have lost their last three home games and trail league leaders Bayern Munich by five points, 11 match days into the 2020/2021 season.
In Europe, however, the 63-year-old Swiss Favre led the club into the last 16 of this term’s UEFA Champions League after they finished top of their group. He had been in charge at Dortmund since leaving French club Nice in July 2018.
“That was a catastrophe,” Favre himself admitted following the home defeat by Stuttgart. “We were not good in getting possession. We made it easy for Stuttgart. We had no patience and they profited from it.
“It was not good. We were just not there. That should not happen. Stuttgart played well, but we were very, very poor. You can’t get away with that.”
Favre guided Dortmund to second in the German top flight last season.
Edin Terzic, Otto Addo and Sebastian Geppert will take over on an interim basis amid a tight schedule which sees Dortmund face away trips to Werder Bremen on Tuesday, to Union Berlin on Friday, and then to 2. Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig in the German Cup on Tuesday, December 22.
