April 30, (THEWILL) – Manchester United edged closer to securing a top-four finish with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes ended his three-month English Premier League goal drought to put United ahead, capitalising on questionable goalkeeping from Emiliano Martinez. Despite dominating the second half, United failed to convert their chances and were ultimately indebted to Victor Lindelof’s goal-line clearance to secure the victory.

Aston Villa, one of the EPL’s in-form teams since Unai Emery’s appointment in October, went close to an opener in the 19th minute when David de Gea blocked Alex Moreno’s powerful drive. United almost capitalised on the let-off nine minutes later, with Casemiro hitting the crossbar from Jadon Sancho’s pass.

However, it was Fernandes, who broke the deadlock just before half-time, squeezing in from a tight angle after Martinez parried Marcus Rashford’s initial effort. A VAR check for a possible Rashford offside did not change the outcome.

Despite their dominance, United’s final pass was often poor, with Sancho and Christian Eriksen making particularly bad decisions in the attacking third. Villa almost took advantage late on, but Lindelof’s clearance ensured United held on for a vital win.

The Red Devils will be hoping to build on this win and maintain their push for a top-four finish this season. Next up for Erik ten Hag’s charges is a Thursday trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, while Aston Villa face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
