April 30, (THEWILL) – Italian football fans were left on the edge of their seats as Napoli missed out on a chance to clinch their first Serie A title in 33 years.
Boulaye Dia’s sensational equaliser earned a 1-1 draw for Salernitana, denying Napoli the chance to win the Scudetto on home soil since the Diego Maradona era. Despite Inter’s victory over Lazio earlier on Sunday, which provided the opportunity, Napoli could not secure the win that could have sealed the title.
The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was filled with anticipation as fans waited to celebrate their first Scudetto in over three decades. Napoli fans were treated to an exciting match that tested their patience as the team searched for a game-settling second goal. In the 62nd minute, Napoli looked set to make history after Mathias Olivera headed the I Partenopei ahead.
However, Dia’s brilliant 84th-minute effort dashed their dreams, meaning Luciano Spalletti’s side will have to wait until at least Wednesday, when Lazio take on Sassuolo, to have another shot. Despite their efforts to win it at home, Salernitana stood firm, frustrating the home crowd with subsequent saves from Guillermo Ochoa.
Napoli will now look ahead to their next match on Thursday, against Udinese, while Salernitana will face Fiorentina on Wednesday.
