August 20, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian women’s national football team has received assurances from FIFA that they will receive their prize money earned from the recent 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, especially with the appointment of an official to monitor payments.
THEWILL recalls that FIFA’s Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura, informed the players that they need not be concerned about any difficulties in claiming their World Cup rewards. Weeks after Samoura’s statement, FIFA has now designated a top official to monitor the situation as promised. The decisive action of appointing FIFA’s Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, is to guarantee the players get paid by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Reports monitored by THEWILL claim that Fernandes was assigned this task across Africa where there are worries about World Cup payments. Samoura, who is from Senegal, spent time with the Super Falcons in Australia and applauded them for their accomplishments at the tournament.
The Super Falcons earned $1.38 million for their World Cup performance. Under the arrangement, each player is owed $60,000 from the total prize money pool. Fernandes is expected to ensure the payments are made appropriately.
