August 20, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa put their opening day defeat behind them with an emphatic 4-0 home victory against Everton on Sunday.
Goals from John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey and debutant John Duran gave Villa a comfortable win, after last week’s heavy loss at Newcastle. Villa capitalised on poor Everton defending to take a 2-0 lead into half-time, with captain McGinn volleying home before Luiz converted a penalty. Everton’s cause was not helped by an early injury to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Despite missing key players due to injury, Villa continued to control the game after the break. Bailey added a third after a defensive mix-up, before substitute Duran capped off an impressive performance on his home debut late on.
Everton rarely threatened the Villa goal, with Jordan Pickford forced into a string of saves. Alex Iwobi was not as influential as he used to be for the visitors and substituted six minutes after the interval. The visitors have now lost their opening two games, cranking up the pressure on manager Sean Dyche.
The win lifts Villa into the top half of the table, while Everton remain rooted to the bottom after two matches. Manager Unai Emery will be delighted with his team’s response after the disappointment of last week. Next up is a UEFA Europa League qualifier against Hibernian on Wednesday, while Everton will host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
