August 5, (THEWILL) — Highlife singer Flavour has opened up about a personal struggle in his life, revealing that he battled with masturbation for about two years before eventually overcoming the habit.

The singer made the revelation during a recent TikTok Live session, where he spoke about his early sexual experiences and the challenges he faced before rising to fame.

According to Flavour, the struggle began after he lost his virginity at the age of 24 and later lost contact with the woman he had his first sexual experience with.

He said his attempts to reconnect with her were unsuccessful, leaving him emotionally affected and searching for a way to cope.

“After getting disvirgined at 24, I began to look for the girl that disvirgined me, but at that time, there was no phone. She gave me her email, so I was going to the cybercafé to email her back and forth. There was no response, so I gave up.”

Flavour said a friend later introduced him to Mapouka dance videos, which contributed to the habit becoming more intense.

He revealed that it became difficult to control, occurring multiple times a day, and that he sometimes used Goya oil and Morning Fresh liquid soap during the period.

The singer said the habit eventually affected him emotionally, leaving him ashamed and unable to discuss the issue openly with family members or close friends.

In an effort to overcome the struggle, Flavour said he sought help from his mother’s pastor, who advised him to undergo a 21-day programme of prayer, fasting and Bible study.

He added, “He gave me some prayer points and Bible verses I had to read every day. I started fasting, but it wasn’t even up to the weekend. I had a show, and the moment I started seeing girls’ shapes as I was mounting the stage, I entered the toilet.”

After the setback, Flavour said he later confided in an elderly Cameroonian bassist who was a member of his band.

According to the singer, the bassist offered advice and helped him find another approach to dealing with the struggle.

Flavour said the band member later arranged for him to visit a brothel, after which he began setting aside part of his earnings for regular visits. He said the change eventually helped him overcome the habit.

Flavour, whose real name is Chinedu Okoli, is one of Nigeria’s leading highlife artistes, known for hit songs including “Nwa Baby” (Ashawo Remix), “Ada Ada” and “Golibe.”

Flavour’s disclosure has generated mixed reactions on social media, with fans sharing different opinions about addiction, recovery and the approach he said helped him overcome the struggle.

Some users described the habit as a difficult challenge, while others questioned whether the method Flavour mentioned was the best approach.

Reacting to the revelation, X user @FXHustler2ms said addiction could affect a person’s ability to enjoy relationships, writing: “Hmmm masturbation is a trap whereby if you fall in it to get escape is by grace of God. I swear you can have a very beautiful partner and still leave her to masturbate because if you are too addicted to it, sex won’t fully satisfy your gaze.”

Another user, @Bouzouki366477, expressed surprise at Flavour’s mention of using household products during that period, writing: “E get some info even bandit no go fit get from me, haba … .morning fresh abi which one?”

Meanwhile, @DeleFayemi criticized the idea that visiting brothels could be a solution, arguing that overcoming addiction requires addressing personal triggers.

He wrote: “This is very misleading and I hope youths will not adopt this mentality. You don’t fight an addiction by aiding what fuels it. I was waiting for the solution until I saw he was later introduced to going to brothels. Did that solve the masturbation? I’m sure that didn’t stop it either. It’s an addiction that needs intentional effort and attention to triggers.”
