November 04, (THEWILL) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria has confirmed the safety of its citizens living in Libya after concerns arose from a recent Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary ruling. The statement comes amid reports of alleged threats against Nigerians working in Libya following CAF’s decision to penalise the Libyan Football Federation.
The controversy began when Nigeria’s national team was detained for several hours at Al-Abraq Airport in October. The Super Eagles were redirected from their planned landing at Benghazi Airport, leading to their withdrawal from the 2025 AFCON qualifier match against Libya. CAF’s disciplinary committee ruled in Nigeria’s favour, awarding them three points and three goals while imposing a $50,000 fine on Libya.
Ministry spokesman Eche Abu-Obe addressed the situation, stating that Nigerian citizens in Libya continue their daily activities without interference from local authorities. The Ministry emphasised its dedication to protecting Nigerian citizens worldwide, maintaining that their well-being remains a priority for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The incident occurred when the team’s flight, piloted by a Tunisian national, received instructions to change course to Al-Abraq Airport, located 150 miles from the original destination. This diversion violated Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
Nigeria currently leads Group D with 10 points from four matches. The team requires just one point from their remaining fixtures against Benin and Rwanda in November to qualify for the continental tournament. The Libyan Football Federation must pay their fine within 60 days of notification and have shown some interest in appealing the judgement.
