July 22, (THEWILL) – In the aftermath of the expiration of Jesse Lingard’s contract with Manchester United, the Englishman has joined English Premier League returnees, Nottingham Forest, on a free transfer.
Lingard, a product of United’s academy, struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford last season, making just two starts in the EPL during the 2021/2022 season. Although he featured in some Cup matches, his contract was not renewed and a return to West Ham, where he had a productive loan spell in the second half of the 2020/2021 campaign and scored nine goals in 16 appearances, was mooted.
Also, a number of European teams, including Newcastle United, were rumoured to be interested in the midfielder. However, on Thursday, the 29-year-old decided to sign a one-year contract with newly promoted Forest.
Lingard is Forest’s 11th new acquisition of the transfer window and will travel with them on their preseason tour of Germany, where they will next play Union Berlin, the former club of another new signing, Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi.
The day before Lingard arrived, Forest recruited Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo from Huddersfield, along with United loanee Dean Henderson, Neco Williams, who all joined Awoniyi in the EPL side for the new season.
