April 16, (THEWILL) — Former Arsenal goalkeeper, Alex Manninger, has passed away at the age of 48 following a car crash near Salzburg, Austria, this morning, April 16, 2026.
Manninger’s car was struck by a train at a level crossing in Nussdorf am Haunsberg. Despite efforts from emergency services, he could not be revived. The train driver and passengers were unharmed.
Manninger began his career at his hometown club, Red Bull Salzburg, before playing for 14 teams across Europe.
He joined Arsenal in 1997 and made 64 appearances, winning the Premier League and FA Cup in 1998. After leaving Arsenal, Manninger had stints at clubs, including Juventus, Fiorentina, Udinese, and Augsburg.
He also earned 33 caps for Austria and played at Euro 2008.
Arsenal said in a statement: “Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.”
Red Bull Salzburg, Juventus, and other clubs also expressed their condolences.
The Austrian Football Association called him “an outstanding ambassador of Austrian football.”
