April 02, (THEWILL) — US President Donald Trump sparked outrage in France after mocking French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron during a private White House lunch on April 1, 2026.
The lunch, focused on NATO and Middle East tensions, took a surprising turn when Trump made personal jokes about the couple.
In footage briefly posted to the White House’s YouTube channel, Trump said Brigitte Macron “treats him extremely badly” and referenced a May 2025 moment in Vietnam, joking that Macron was “still recovering from the right to the jaw,” referring to a video that appeared to show Brigitte pushing his face.
He also mimicked a French accent while recounting Macron’s alleged refusal to send military support to the US in the Middle East, saying: “No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won.”
The comments quickly went viral, with clips and memes of the “jaw” joke spreading across social media.
