May 03, (THEWILL) – Fulham clinched the 2021/2022 Championship title with a 7-0 battering of Luton Town on Monday night.
Marco Silva’s team knew going into the game at Craven Cottage that only a win would ensure top spot mathematically – and they delivered the maximum points necessary.
Despite a recent blip, the Cottagers have led the league since November and have always looked certain to cross the finish line on top.
On the half-hour mark, Tom Cairney gave Fulham the lead, blasting home from the edge of the box following superb work from Harry Wilson. Just before half-time, Kenny Tete extended his team’s lead by driving a long-range shot into the net.
Then, Fabio Carvalho raced onto Wilson’s round-the-corner flick and finished comfortably eight minutes after the restart for the Cottagers.
Aleksandar Mitrovic also joined the pummeling with his 42nd goal of the Championship season, tying Guy Whittingham for the most goals scored in an English second-tier campaign.
Soon after, Bobby Cordova-Reid made it 5-0, and 11 minutes later, substitute Jean Michael Seri scored from distance for his side’s sixth.
Mitrovic then made sure he stole the headlines as the clock ticked down, netting his brace in second-half stoppage time to break the aforementioned scoring record of Whittingham’s.
The Serbia international’s amazing goal-scoring antics have been key to Fulham’s success this season, but Liverpool loanee Wilson, as well as Carvalho – who is ironically slated to join the Reds this summer – have been instrumental overall.
Fulham will now focus on their return to the Premier League now that they have won the title.
The Cottagers are expected to be heavily backed in the transfer market once again, with Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers among the early targets.
