March 22, (THEWILL) – A highly anticipated fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been called off after talks between the two camps fell apart.
Despite agreeing to a 70-30 split in Fury’s favour, negotiations broke down over the issue of a rematch clause, with Fury reportedly against the idea while Usyk was in favour of it. The fight had been scheduled for April 29 at Wembley Stadium, with fans eagerly anticipating the clash between two of the sport’s unbeaten champions.
Usyk, who is the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and Ring magazine champion, had successfully defended his titles against Anthony Joshua last year, while Fury had defended his WBC title against Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora. The proposed fight between the two champions would have marked the first time in the four-belts era that an undisputed fight had been announced.
The excitement surrounding the potential match-up aside, Usyk’s team ultimately walked away from the negotiations, claiming that Fury and his team did not want the fight to take place. With the Fury-Usyk fight off the table, the WBA is now expected to order Usyk to fight mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois.
