March 22, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek, the world’s number one tennis player, has announced that she will not be able to participate in the Miami Open and Billie Jean King Cup due to an injury.

Swiatek disclosed that she had been struggling with a rib complaint following an infection after her loss to Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals of Indian Wells. “We were trying to handle it and continue to play as long as it was safe for me,” she wrote on social media.

Swiatek’s medical team conducted an analysis of her condition, and unfortunately, she is still experiencing a lot of pain. As a result, she has had to withdraw from the Miami Open and Billie Jean King Cup. Swiatek expressed her gratitude for her team and said that she would keep her fans informed about her next move.

“It’s a truly difficult call to not play in Miami and BJKC, but health is the most important,” she said. The injury suffered by Swiatek raises concerns about her ability to defend her French Open title, which she won by defeating Coco Gauff in the final at Roland-Garros in 2022.

Swiatek could theoretically miss some tournaments, including the Stuttgart Open, Madrid Open, and Italian Open, and still play at Roland-Garros, but it will be tight if she does.
