June 05, (THEWILL) – Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula were defeated in the women’s doubles final as Gauff suffered another final loss for the second consecutive day, this time by Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic.
As THEWILL previously reported, world number one Iga Swiatek had swatted off the American teenager in the singles final on Saturday, leaving her in tears after her loss.
In the women’s doubles final, Gauff and Pegula raced to take the first set 6-2, with Gauff appeared to be shrugging off the singles’ loss, but the French pair rallied and won 2-6 6-3 6-2. It was a remarkable comeback for Garcia and Mladenovic, who were once the dominant forces in women’s doubles before parting after a public spat.
Gauff was impressive throughout the first set, striking some superb winners both from the back of the court and at the net. Garcia and Mladenovic were on the verge of being swept aside, but a break of serve at the start of the second set saved them.
They surged to a 4-0 lead and, despite being pegged back, the French pair hung on to force a deciding third set when they took the second 6-2. In the third, Garcia and Mladenovic worked a break of Pegula’s serve and rushed to wrap to the final, cheered on by the home crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
It was Mladenovic’s fourth women’s doubles title in Paris, but Garcia’s second.
