January 15, (THEWILL) – Andriy Shevchenko, Genoa’s head coach, has been fired according to the club.
Since his arrival on November 7, the 45-year-old Ukrainian coach has overseen 11 matches in charge of the Rossoblu. Following the resignation of previous coach Davide Ballardini, he won one of those games, drew three, and lost the other seven, all while struggling to restore the club’s fortunes.
Genoa congratulated Shevchenko and his team for their efforts, and announced that Under-17 coach Abdoulay Konko would serve as temporary coach until a permanent replacement is found.
Shevchenko was previously the head coach of the Ukrainian national team, where he managed 52 matches in five years. He led the squad to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 for the first time in their history, and he stepped down soon after.
The 3-1 loss to Milan in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 was the Ukrainian coach’s last game in charge of Genoa.
