fEBRUARY 22, (THEWILL) – Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool legend, who is currently a BT Sport pundit, has called on Reds’ manager, Jurgen Klopp, to launch an “inquest” into Liverpool’s heavy 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League.
Gerrard described the loss as a “reality check” for Klopp’s side, who had been showing improvement after a tough spell, winning back-to-back English Premier League games against Newcastle and Everton.
Despite getting off to a perfect start with two early goals, Liverpool’s vulnerabilities in defence were exposed as Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema each scored twice to lead Real Madrid to a stunning victory in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
Gerrard admitted that any team that concedes five goals must conduct an inquest into why and how it happened, and he is confident that Klopp will do so in the coming days.
