February 09, (THEWILL) — Renowned Ghanaian highlife musician Ebo Taylor has died at the age of 90.
His family confirmed his death on Sunday through a post shared on his official Instagram page. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“The world has lost a giant. A colossus of African music. Ebo Taylor passed away yesterday; a day after the launch of the Ebo Taylor Music Festival and exactly a month after his 90th birthday, leaving behind an unmatched artistry legacy.” the family wrote
Taylor was widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Ghanaian music. His music career spanned over six decades and was defined by a fusion of Ghanaian rhythms, jazz, funk, and soul.
He played in major bands in the 1950s and 1960s and later formed his own groups.His work helped shape both highlife and Afrobeat music.
He collaborated with several notable musicians, including Fela Kuti, and was often compared to the late Nigerian legend for his influence on African music.
Taylor’s music reached global audiences later in his career. His songs were sampled by international artists such as Usher, Kelly Rowland, Jidenna, and the Black Eyed Peas.
Tributes have continued to pour in from musicians and fans across the world, many describing him as one of Africa’s greatest music legends.
