August 17, (THEWILL) – There was good injury recovery news for Philadelphia 76ers centre Joel Embiid as he was informed that he would not need to undergo knee surgery to repair his torn meniscus, an injury he sustained to his right leg.

Embiid, an All-Star centre in the process of finalising a four-year, $196 million supermax contract extension, ended up tearing his meniscus during the 76ers’ first-round playoff series against the Washington Wizards.

The tough Cameroonian professional was not to be stopped and went on to put up huge numbers during Philadelphia’s two-round post-season stay in the National Basketball Association (NBA) post-season play.

Although the 76ers were eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks, Embiid posted 30.4 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game across seven games in the second round of the playoffs, with 37.3 minutes per game.

In four games during the first round, the 27-year-old, who was was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the 76ers, racked up 24.0 points and 6.8 boards in just 23.8 minutes per game.

By not needing surgery, Embiid can be back at 100 percent by the start of the 2021-22 season. That will allow the 2.13m basketballer to once again have the Sixers contending for the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, regardless of Ben Simmons’ status with the team.
