Gov Eno Defends Political Realignment, Unveils Massive Infrastructure, Power, Welfare Push In Akwa Ibom

April 05, (THEWILL) — Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has justified his administration’s recent political realignment with the Federal Government, while highlighting sweeping infrastructure, agricultural, power, and social welfare initiatives across the state.

The justification was contained in his 2026 Easter broadcast on Sunday, explaining that the decision to align Akwa Ibom politically with the centre was “decisive and timely”, even as the unfolding national dynamics have validated the move.

Eno, who assumed office in 2023, said his administration has so far undertaken over 1,300 kilometres of road projects across the state, with an additional 167 kilometres recently approved by the State Executive Council. He added that ongoing projects would be commissioned as part of activities marking his third year in office.

According to him, all 31 local government areas have benefitted from interventions, including road construction, model primary healthcare centres, schools, and general hospitals, with specific reference to ongoing work in Ukanafun.

The governor also outlined plans to expand rural development through water and youth initiatives. He disclosed that solar-powered water projects would be constructed in all 369 wards, while youth-friendly centres are being developed in 14 local government areas to support ICT and creative industries.

In the agricultural sector, Eno said the state is advancing what he described as a “revolution” through initiatives such as the Ibom Model Farm and a N2 billion grant to farmers.

He announced plans to launch a palm crop programme, backed by N2.5 billion for the procurement of 620,000 seedlings, aimed at boosting rural income and reviving palm produce as a major economic driver.

On economic empowerment, the governor said N20 million had been approved for cooperative societies in each ward, targeting rural women and small-scale entrepreneurs, adding that a separate N2 billion traders’ grant introduced in 2025 is already improving livelihoods.

Eno also addressed the issue of inherited liabilities, stating that his administration has paid over N82 billion out of N111 billion owed in gratuities and other entitlements to retirees since 2012, with a commitment to clear the backlog before the end of his first term.

Highlighting social intervention efforts, he revealed that 355 “Arise Compassionate Homes” have been delivered to vulnerable residents, with a target of 500 units statewide. Beneficiaries, he said, also receive financial support.

The governor said the state is investing heavily in tourism and healthcare infrastructure to diversify its economy beyond oil. Key projects include the Arise Palm Resort, Ibom International Hotel, Ibom International Convention Centre, and a new Ibom International Hospital designed to promote medical tourism.

In aviation, he confirmed that preparations are underway for international flight operations at Victor Attah International Airport, supported by recent federal approval. He also disclosed that Ibom Air has expanded its fleet with four additional aircraft and expects another delivery before year-end.

On the long-anticipated Ibom Deep Seaport, Eno said feasibility studies have been completed and investor interest is growing, stressing that the project would follow due process despite public impatience.

Addressing power challenges, the governor said the state has established its own electricity regulatory commission and electrification agency following the Federal Electricity Act, 2023.

He added that a roadmap is in place to improve electricity supply within 12 months, including solutions for off-grid rural communities.

Eno maintained that Akwa Ibom remains one of the safest states in the country, attributing this to collaboration between security agencies and local vigilance groups.

While acknowledging ongoing political activities, he cautioned against divisive politics, urging residents to embrace unity and peaceful engagement.
