June 3 (THEWILL) — Peabo Bryson, the Grammy-winning R&B singer known for his iconic Disney duets and romantic ballads, has died at the age of 75.
Bryson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 2, surrounded by family and loved ones, according to a statement from his family.
His death came days after he suffered a stroke and was placed under medical care.
“While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit”, the family said in a statement.
“His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.”
Bryson won two Grammy Awards for “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle from Disney’s “Aladdin.” Both songs became major hits in the early 1990s.
“A Whole New World” also made history as the first song from an animated Disney film to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over a career that spanned more than five decades, Bryson recorded several R&B classics, including “Feel the Fire,” “I’m So Into You,” “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” and “Can You Stop the Rain.”
Born in South Carolina, Bryson began his music career in the 1970s before becoming one of R&B’s most respected singers. He also collaborated with artists including Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, Regina Belle, and Celine Dion.
In 2019, Bryson survived a heart attack and continued performing. He had recently celebrated his 75th birthday and was planning additional dates on his Golden Touch tour later this year.
His family said details of memorial services will be announced at a later date. Bryson leaves behind a musical legacy that touched generations of fans around the world.
