December 10, (THEWILL) — At the Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday evening, Mason Greenwood scored twice in Marseille’s 3-2 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, strengthening their position in the race for UEFA Champions League knockout qualification.
The Belgian outfit suffered a setback to their own play-off ambitions despite taking an early lead.
Anan Khalaili opened the scoring after just five minutes, cutting inside from the right flank before driving a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
Marseille equalised 10 minutes later when Igor Paixao converted the rebound after Kjell Scherpen had saved Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s initial effort, firing high into the net.
Greenwood struck four minutes before half-time, drilling a low shot past Scherpen, who got a hand to the ball but could not prevent it crossing the line.
The forward added his second goal in the 58th minute, racing clear of his marker before curling a precise finish into the bottom-left corner.
Union Saint-Gilloise responded through Khalaili’s second goal after a poor clearance, but their late rally fell short.
Kevin Mac Allister and Promise David both had efforts disallowed for offside, whilst goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli produced an outstanding save to deny David’s header in stoppage time.
