BEVERLY HILLS, December 02, (THEWILL) – One of Nigeria’s most prolific female forwards, Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala, was among a host of female footballers nominated for the first-ever UEFA Women’s Team of the Year, following her exploits with FC Barcelona Femení.
THEWILL reported on Tuesday that UEFA had published the shortlist for fan voting on their website and the Super Falcons captain unsurprisingly was one of the 15 nominees in the “Forwards” category. She appeared alongside her Barca teammate Spanish striker Jennifer Hermoso.
Oshoala’s inclusion, as well as others in the 50-name shortlist, was founded on UEFA’s determination that based on her individual performances in European and domestic competitions during the 2020 season, she showed herself worthy to be included in the prestigious final XI.
Barcelona claimed the Spanish Primera Iberdrola title and achieved an unbeaten streak of 21 matches during the 2019-20 campaign. Oshoala netted 20 times in 19 outings during the season, helping the team to the title and forthrightly earning her nomination by UEFA.
The 26-year-old is the only African nominated in the first-ever women’s TOTY shortlist, as she hopes to extend her reputation beyond the continent following a record-equalling fourth African crown.
Since the Nigerian striker arrived on loan from China’s Dalian Quanjian in February 2019, the former Arsenal and Liverpool star has chalked up 32 league appearances for Barcelona, putting in 29 goals in all competitions.
