August 07, (THEWILL) – In a historic night for mixed martial arts at UFC Vegas 59, held inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jamahal Hill put an end to former UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Thiago Santos, with a fourth-round technical knockout.
Compared to his other recent fights, Santos was more active in the opening stages of this one. The former championship contender lined up a few powerful shots over the top while scoring some hard leg kicks. Hill was willing, though, and the rangy attacker avoided any major incidents to match Santos with some precise counterattacks and gain a sizable advantage.
With strong grappling and ground control in the third round, Santos recovered the upper hand. As Hill made his first-ever appearance in the championship bouts, he began to display some damage.
Hill made a suitable response. In the fourth round in an all-out brawl between the two light heavyweights, “Sweet Dreams” delivered the decisive strikes. With a vicious right hand, he grabbed Santos and knocked “Marreta” to the ground. Intense punches and elbows from Hill continued until referee Herb Dean stepped in to break up the battle and call it a victory for “Sweet Dreams”.
A remarkable night of 10 UFC fights that needed no judges because they all ended in knockouts or submissions was finished off by Hill’s win that made applauding fans feel they were thoroughly compensated for their time and money.
