June 3 (THEWILL) — Hollywood filmmaker, Martin Scorsese, has joined artificial intelligence company, Black Forest Labs, as an adviser, becoming one of the industry’s most high-profile directors to publicly embrace AI as a creative tool.
The Oscar-winning director, known for films such as “Taxi Driver” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”, said he has been using the company’s FLUX AI model to create storyboards for an upcoming project.
Scorsese, 83, described the technology as “creatively freeing” and said it has helped make the pre-production process faster and more efficient.
“For 70 years, I’ve been creating my own storyboards. There’s always been this problem of how do you communicate what you see in your head to your cast and crew”, Scorsese said.
“I recently tested this out on a scene, and the ability to visualise and immediately share the storyboard was creatively freeing. During the pre-production process, time costs money, and this allowed us to move faster without sacrificing quality or craft.”
According to the company, Scorsese is using the AI tool while working on his upcoming film “What Happens at Night”, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Scorsese said he sees AI as part of the evolution of filmmaking, pointing to his earlier use of 3D in “Hugo” and digital de-ageing in “The Irishman”.
His comments come as Hollywood continues to debate the role of AI in filmmaking.
Supporters say it can speed up production and improve creative workflows, while critics warn it could affect creative jobs and the role of human artists.
Scorsese joins filmmakers such as James Cameron and Peter Jackson who have explored AI tools, while others, including Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, have raised concerns about its use in creative work.
