April 02, (THEWILL) – Hollywood veteran, Val Kilmer, has passed away at the age of 65. The actor, best known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, died on Tuesday, April 1, at his Los Angeles home following complications from pneumonia.
His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed his passing in a statement to The New York Times, noting that he was surrounded by loved ones.
Kilmer, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, had made a full recovery. However, his battle with the disease left him with permanent damage to his voice, a challenge he detailed in his 2021 documentary, Val.
Born on December 31, 1959, to Christian Scientist parents, Kilmer made history at 17 as the youngest student to be admitted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. His Hollywood journey began with the 1984 comedy Top Secret! Followed by Real Genius the next year.
Kilmer shot to fame with his role as Iceman in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, where he played Tom Cruise’s on-screen rival. In 1995, he stepped into the role of Batman in Batman Forever. His portrayal of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) further cemented his status as a versatile and dedicated actor.
In 1988, Kilmer married British actress Joanne Whalley, with whom he had two children. Their marriage ended in 1996 after eight years together.
His passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and a career that spanned nearly four decades.
