April 14, (THEWILL) — More than 1,000 film and TV professionals have signed an open letter opposing Paramount Skydance’s proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, warning it could harm jobs, creativity, and competition across the industry.
The letter, signed by major names including Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Stiller, and Kristen Stewart, argues that the deal would “further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape.”
Signatories say the merger could lead to fewer films and TV shows, fewer jobs across the industry, and less choice for audiences.
They also warn that it could reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to four.
“The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and less choice for audiences,” the letter stated.
The deal, announced in February, would combine two of Hollywood’s biggest studios into a single media company, pending shareholder and regulatory approval.
Critics say past mergers have already reduced mid-budget films, weakened independent distribution, and limited the range of stories being produced.
“We are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good,” the letter added warning that “the integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised.”
Paramount Skydance has defended the deal, saying it would support creative talent and increase production.
The company said the merger would allow it to greenlight more projects and “bring stories to audiences at a truly global scale,” while pledging to release at least 30 films in cinemas each year and continue licensing content widely.
The merger is now under review by regulators, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, with possible legal action under consideration.
Despite the company’s response, opposition in Hollywood continues to grow, with more industry professionals adding their names to the letter.
