February 26, (THEWILL) – Egypt has been knocked out of the TotalEnergies 2023 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations after a crushing defeat by Senegal, who won 4-0 in their final Group A fixture at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday night.
Although the match was quiet in the first half, the second half saw Senegal dominate possession and chances, with Pape Diop scoring a hat trick to secure their victory.
Senegal had already secured a spot in the quarter-finals before the match, and Malick Daf made a few changes to his starting lineup, with Mame Faye and Djibril Diarra, given a starting berth.
Meanwhile, Egypt was more enterprising after the restart, but they failed to force Senegal behind. Khaled Awad came close for the hosts, but Senegal goalkeeper Landing Badji preserved his clean sheet.
The win for Senegal put them at the top of the group with nine points, with Nigeria in second place with six points, thanks to their 2-0 victory over Mozambique in Ismailia. The results eliminated both Egypt and Mozambique, who finished with a solitary point each.
