August 4, (THEWILL) — Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has opened up about his past struggles with maintaining a luxurious image, admitting that he once borrowed money to impress people.
Speaking on an episode of MENtality, hosted by media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu alongside Banky W, the 39-year-old actor said he previously felt pressured to portray a lifestyle that did not always reflect his reality.
Timini explained that as he grew older, he realized that chasing luxury could become an endless cycle because there will always be another trend to pursue.
“There will always be a newer watch, a newer car. I used to be a perfume collector. I had about 150. But I realized that I could have invested the money I spent acquiring perfumes into purchasing land,” he said.
The actor clarified that he is not against enjoying luxury but encouraged people to consider whether their choices are driven by personal satisfaction or pressure from others.
“I’m not trying to talk down on having a nice car or watch. One thing you need to remember is, are you doing it for yourself? Are you genuinely happy with it? And without it, would you still be happy?” he asked.
Timini also revealed that he has experienced financial struggles despite his public image, saying he learnt to remain content regardless of his circumstances.
He urged public figures to be more honest about life’s highs and lows instead of creating unrealistic expectations online.
“There were days when I used to be that guy who lived a fake life and borrowed to impress people. But not anymore. Influencing is also kind of a false life that I’ve tried to step back from because I realized that who are we deceiving? I know I live my life clearly, but the person watching me, what are they doing to try to keep up with what I’m doing? That’s one thing that all of us who have that platform need to start preaching,” Egbuson added.
The actor’s comments have sparked conversations about social media pressure, financial responsibility and the importance of presenting a more realistic picture of success.
