August 5, (THEWILL) — Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he believes he can win Nigeria’s presidential election but has no plans to enter politics under the country’s current electoral system.
The singer made the remarks during a recent livestream with content creator Carter Efe, where he was asked whether he would consider contesting for public office.
Responding, Davido questioned the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
He said, “Nigeria wey dem dey write result? I no get time for all those ones.”
He added that he would not accept being cheated in an election, saying he is not the type of person who would simply walk away if he believed the outcome had been manipulated.
He stated, “Because I no be all those ones wey you go cheat me, I go go sleep for house. I will do something to you if you cheat me.”
He said he would rather focus on his music career until elections in the country become more transparent.
He added, “Let me just focus on my music until there is transparency, then I can go ahead and contest for elective positions. Nobody can beat me in any election, never. In a free and fair election, I can win presidential election in Nigeria.”
Davido added that the lack of transparency in elections is the main reason he has no interest in seeking political office for now.
The singer also said he is closely watching the upcoming Osun State governorship election, where his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking a second term in the August 15 poll.
Davido’s interest in the election is not new. In recent months, he has openly supported Adeleke’s re-election campaign, urged voters to protect their votes and repeatedly spoken against electoral malpractice.
Although he has ruled out contesting for office for now, Davido has remained vocal on national issues, using his platform to encourage civic participation and speak against electoral malpractice, police brutality and poor governance.
In June, he drew attention to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State by wearing a custom jacket bearing their names and the message “Bring Them Home” during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles.
He was also among the prominent entertainers who joined the 2020 #EndSARS protests, calling for an end to police brutality and greater accountability.
