June 01, (THEWILL) – Kelechi Iheanacho has emerged as the recipient of Leicester City’s prestigious Player of the Season accolade for the 2022/2023 campaign.
Despite the team’s relegation to the Championship, Iheanacho’s outstanding performances made him shine among his teammates. With his tally of five goals and five assists in 28 appearances in the English Premier League, the Nigerian player contributed his quota to the team’s campaign.
Iheanacho’s impact extended beyond the league as he netted three goals in three appearances during the FA Cup, resulting in a total of eight goals and five assists across all competitions for the season. Throughout the EPL, the Super Eagles forward showcased his prowess by finding the back of the net in victories against Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Moreover, his crucial contributions propelled the Foxes to the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup with goals against Gillingham FC and Walsall. Notably, the 26-year-old achieved these goal contributions despite starting only 11 games and being substituted into 17 matches.
It is worth mentioning that he is the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious Leicester City Player of the Year award and the first African player to claim the accolade since Riyad Mahrez, the Algerian forward, achieved the feat in 2016. Indeed, Iheanacho joins Mahrez as the only two Africans in the club’s history to be bestowed with this honour.
