June 01, (THEWILL) – Brazil’s bid to claim victory in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup tournament for the first time since 2011 remains on track after overcoming the challenge posed by Tunisia in a 4-1 win.
Although reduced to 10 players just before the halfway mark, the South Americans refused to let their heads hang. Their leading goal scorer in the competition, Marcos Leonardo, showcased his skills by converting an early penalty kick, catching Tunisia’s Dries Araoui off guard with a shot straight down the middle.
Leonardo continued to make his mark on the game by setting up a goal for Brazil’s captain, Andrey Santos, with a clever pass that allowed Santos to double their lead. However, just before half-time, Brazil’s Robert Renan received a red card for pulling back Tunisia’s Mohamed Dhaoui, denying him a clear goalscoring opportunity, as determined by referee Halil Umut Meler.
Despite Tunisia’s strong efforts and the support of the home crowd in La Plata, Brazil managed to weather the storm during the second half, fending off their opponents’ attacks and maintaining their lead. Tunisia believed they had secured a goal when substitute Raki Aouani displayed excellent control and finishing skills. However, an on-field VAR review revealed that Aouani had handled the ball during the process, leading to the goal’s cancellation.
In stoppage time, Brazil’s substitutes Matheus Martins and Santos went on the counter-attack and scored two goals to punish the Tunisians who pushed forward in search of field goals. Tunisia’s Mahmoud Ghorbel managed to score a scrappy late consolation goal, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match. Brazil’s next challenge awaits them in the quarter-finals against Israel on Saturday.
