July 22, (THEWILL) – At the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson dominated the women’s 200m homestretch, clocking the second-fastest time in history of 21.45s to complete a personal sweep.
Jackson, who shattered Dafne Schippers’ championship record of 21.63s, now holds the 200-metre gold medal, the 100m silver medal from Sunday, and the 400m bronze medals from the 2019 and 2015 World Championships. She now holds the record for becoming the only athlete to ever win all three sprint disciplines at the World Championships.
The first sweep of the podium in a women’s 200m event at the World Championships was, however, denied to Jamaica. Instead, Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain, the reigning champion, finished in third place with a time of 22.02s.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the silver medal with a time of 21.81s, a season’s best and just 0.02s off her personal best. Fraser-Pryce was just ahead of Jackson, 11.03s to 11.04s, despite having the quickest split for the first 100m. They eventually reached a straightaway.
In contrast to Fraser-Pryce, who was the only sprinter in the field who was alive in 1988 when Florence Griffith Joyner set the world record of 21.34s, she ran a strong 10.41s for her second 100m.
