August 25, (THEWILL) – Jamaican sprinter, Shericka Jackson, dominated the women’s 200 metres final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Friday, storming to victory in 21.41 seconds.
Jackson’s sensational time was just 0.07 seconds outside the long-standing world record and the second fastest 200m ever run. Showing her trademark speed around the bend, Jackson entered the straight with a sizable lead and never looked threatened.
American Gabby Thomas claimed silver in 21.81 sec while compatriot Sha’Carri Richardson took bronze in a personal best 21.92. For Jackson, it was sweet revenge after having to settle for 100m silver earlier in the week. The Jamaican star burst powerfully from the blocks and quickly seized control of the race, leaving Thomas and Richardson in her wake.
While Thomas was unable to make any inroads down the straight, Richardson did close slightly but not nearly enough to challenge Jackson’s dominance. With the commanding victory, Jackson retains the world 200m title she first won in 2019. The win also extends the USA’s drought in the women’s 200m at the World Championships, dating back to Allyson Felix’s third straight title in Berlin in 2009. Pre-race favorites like Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou were non-factors, finishing seventh and eighth.
Jackson’s sensational showing once again demonstrates her position as the clear standout in women’s sprinting right now. On the eve of the 35th anniversary of Florence Griffith Joyner’s seemingly unbreakable world record, Jackson served notice she may be the woman to finally lower the mark.
