August 25, (THEWILL) – Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas cemented her dominance in the women’s triple jump on Friday, winning her fourth consecutive gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Despite struggling in the early rounds, Rojas produced a monumental final jump of 15.08m to snatch victory from Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk, who had led for most of the competition before taking silver with 15.00m.
Rojas got off to a shaky start, standing in eighth place after three jumps with a best of just 14.33m. She continued to battle, fouling on both her fourth and fifth attempts. With one jump remaining, Rojas drew on every ounce of skill and determination, soaring out to a winning distance of 15.08m. She fell to her knees in shock when the distance appeared on the board.
Up to that point, Bekh-Romanchuk looked poised for gold. She took the lead on her very first jump of 15.00m and held it for five rounds before Rojas’ heroics on the final attempt. Bekh-Romanchuk claimed Ukraine’s first medal of these championships. The gold medal cements Rojas’ utter dominance of the event. She has won every major global title since 2017, including the Olympics and three straight indoor and outdoor World Championships.
Her world record stands at a remarkable 15.74m. Despite nearly stumbling out of medal contention, Rojas once again showed her championship pedigree under pressure. Her fourth world gold proves she remains the queen of the triple jump.
