March 01, (THEWILL) – Roma coach, Jose Mourinho, has been hit with a two-match ban and a €10,000 (£8,869) fine after he was sent off during his team’s Serie A defeat to Cremonese.
This marks the third time the coach has been sent off this season. The punishment comes after Mourinho angrily reacted to a challenge on defender Marash Kumbulla, at the start of the second half. Despite his protests, the referee did not give a free-kick to Roma, and Mourinho was subsequently given a red card.
The coach’s reaction to the incident saw him confront the fourth official, Marco Serra, in a forceful and provocative manner. The Italian sports judge presiding over the case ruled that Mourinho’s behaviour was unacceptable, and he must serve his suspension.
Mourinho has since stated that he will be seeking legal advice against Serra. As a result of the ban, the manager will be unable to participate in Roma’s home matches against Juventus and Sassoulo. Roma is currently sitting in fifth place on the Serie A table with 44 points, just one point behind their rivals, Lazio, who are in fourth place.
The club will be hoping to secure a victory without Mourinho physically present in the dugout.
