November 09, (THEWILL) – Slavia Prague kept their UEFA Europa League hopes alive with a convincing 2-0 victory over Roma on Thursday evening. The Czech side turned the tables on the Italians in comprehensive fashion after losing 2-0 in the reverse fixture.
The home side threatened throughout the first half at the Sinobo Stadium in Prague and broke the deadlock just five minutes after the restart. Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar did well to deny Lukas Masopust’s header, but Mojmir Chytil kept the ball alive and Vaclav Jurecka bundled home from close range.
Slavia’s second on 74 minutes certainly was the eye-catcher of the two goals. Masopust found space on the edge of the box and took one touch before arrowing a clinical finish into the bottom corner beyond the reach of Roma’s Mile Svilar.
The win lifts Jindrich Trpisovsky’s side to nine points, level with Roma but ahead on goal difference. Both teams are primed to secure automatic qualification or a place in the knockout play-off round.
After this performance though, Slavia will be full of confidence heading into their remaining European fixtures this season. Their counter-attacking verve and clinical finishing proved too much for Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
