May 25 (THEWILL) — Kannywood actress Wasila Isma’il has died at the age of 46 after a prolonged illness.
Her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, confirmed her death in a social media post on Sunday.
“Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihirrajiun. Wasila Isma’il is dead. She died at the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria Hospital, Kaduna,” he wrote.
Wasila was one of the early stars of Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry based in northern Nigeria. She began her acting career in 1998 with the film “Jinin Masoya.”
She rose to fame in 1999 after starring in the movie “Wasila” alongside actor Ali Nuhu.
The film became one of the most popular Hausa films of its time and helped make her a household name across northern Nigeria.
Following news of her death, fans and colleagues paid tribute to her on social media, describing her as one of the actresses who helped shape the early years of Kannywood.
She is survived by her children.
