October 03, (THEWILL) — The Kano State Government has disbursed N5.6 billion to 1,198 former councillors across the 44 local government areas of the state as part of their outstanding allowances and gratuities.
The payment, launched by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, represents the second tranche in a three-cycle plan to clear a N15.67 billion debt inherited from the previous administration.
The governor recalled that in May, his administration released N1.8 billion to 903 councillors who served between 2014 and 2017.
He described the latest payout as “a moment of justice, fairness, and restoration of dignity” for grassroots leaders whose contributions had long been overlooked.
“Today marks another defining moment in the history of our state. We are not just paying money, we are affirming a principle—that service to Kano State will never be forgotten,” Yusuf said.
According to him, preparations are already underway for the final tranche of N8.2 billion, which will cover entitlements for 1,371 councillors.
The last phase is expected to be completed by the second week of November 2025.
The governor commended the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Accountant General’s Office, bankers, and leaders of the ex-councillors’ forum for facilitating the process.
He urged beneficiaries to spend wisely and use the funds to support their families and communities.
Wild celebrations broke out at the venue as beneficiaries received credit alerts running into millions of naira.
Outside the hall, well-wishers and traders turned the event into a lively carnival atmosphere.
