March 18, (THEWILL) — King Charles and Queen Camilla are hosting Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years.
President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi arrived on Tuesday for a two-day visit.
Today, they received a ceremonial welcome, including a carriage procession, the playing of both Nigeria’s and the UK’s national anthems, and a guard of honour inspected by the royal couple and the Nigerian delegation.
Prince William and Princess Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, are also in attendance, welcoming the Nigerian leaders and accompanying them during the ceremonial procession to the castle.
A full military parade took place on the lawns of Windsor, with soldiers in traditional dress giving a royal salute.
The state banquet at St George’s Hall will feature speeches by King Charles and President Tinubu, attended by political leaders and cultural figures.
Out of respect for Ramadan, there will be no formal lunch with the King, as President Tinubu is fasting.
The visit aims to strengthen UK-Nigeria ties in trade, finance, and cultural exchange.
“This state visit is about turning a historic relationship into a modern economic partnership – transforming trust into opportunity,” said Nigeria’s government spokesman, Mohammed Idris.
“Nigeria’s economic reforms are unlocking the potential of Africa’s largest consumer market. The United Kingdom is a natural partner in what comes next. This visit marks the next step in deepening cooperation across trade, finance, and defence,” Idris added.
Mrs Tinubu, who is also an ordained pastor, will preach at a service at Lambeth Palace and meet leaders of the Church of England during the visit.
