February 26, (THEWILL) — The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has referred the controversy over old tweets linked to singer Simi to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, stating that the agency could not ignore the allegations.
The controversy began after Simi made comments about rape on social media in connection with a recent case involving TikTok user Mirabel.
She said men should stop raping women, stressed that almost every woman she knows has experienced sexual assault, and added that rapists should be castrated.
Her remarks sparked heated reactions online.
Soon after, screenshots of old tweets from 2012 and 2013 resurfaced.
Some posts referenced children at her mother’s daycare, including “love to kiss d kids at my mum’s daycare – they’re super adorable and I’m crazy abt ’em”, among others.
The tweets drew criticism, with some social media users describing them as inappropriate and accusing her of sexualising toddlers.
Simi later responded on her social media page, saying the tweets reflected her youth and her experience helping at her mother’s daycare while also building her music career.
She maintained they were not written “from perversion” and had been taken out of context.
Reacting to the situation, Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency had been monitoring developments.
“What we’ve done is to refer the case to the Commissioner of Police to at least conduct some preliminary investigation.
“There are also reports that this may have happened in a creche managed by her mom. And so issues of safeguarding and child protection concerns have been raised,” she stated.
She added that preliminary investigations are ongoing and noted that prosecution would depend on a complainant coming forward.
“A victim of whatever it is — is it sexual abuse, is it defilement, is it sexual assault by penetration and what have you — so it’s to start the process, encourage anybody who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Simi to please come forward and ensure that their statement is taken and then we know where we’re going to on the matter,” she added.
