April 23, (THEWILL) – After losing 2-1 to RB Leipzig earlier in the week in the DFB Pokal semifinal, Union Berlin came from behind in their Bundesliga fixture on Saturday to win by that same scoreline, thanks to the inspired substitutions of manager Urs Fischer.
Leipzig were the clear favourites heading into the game, but Union came dangerously close to scoring. Fischer’s team fired eight rounds, two of which were on target. Leipzig, on the other hand, had no shots in the first half.
The second half, on the other hand, was a completely different game, with Leipzig taking the initiative right away. Yussuf Poulsen’s shot gave the home side the lead just a minute after the break.
Union continued to threaten despite being down by a goal. The away team was given a lifeline when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty, but it was overturned after a VAR review.
However, the Iron Ones’ perseverance paid off in the end. With five minutes remaining, Fischer substituted Kevin Behrens for Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi and Sven Michel for Dominique Heintz. Michel restored Union’s parity one minute after coming on before setting up Behrens for the victory three minutes later, proving his judgement to be brilliant.
The victory means Union climb to sixth place with 50 points, four points behind Leipzig in fourth.
