March 11, (THEWILL)- Serie A club Lecce has parted ways with their head coach Roberto D’Aversa following an altercation with Hellas Verona’s Thomas Henry after Sunday’s match between the two sides. The incident occurred immediately after the full-time whistle, with both D’Aversa and Henry receiving red cards from referee Daniele Chiffi.
Lecce wasted no time in condemning D’Aversa actions, releasing a statement that described his behaviour as “contrary to the principles and values of sport”. The club stated, “After the events that occurred at the end of the Lecce-Verona match, US Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties.”
The dismissal comes as a significant blow for Lecce, who find themselves precariously positioned at 15th in the Serie A table, just one point above the relegation zone. D’Aversa’s tenure at the helm had begun at the start of the 2023-2024 season, with the 48-year-old signing a one-year deal with an option for an additional year if the club avoided relegation.
Before his stint with Lecce, D’Aversa had managed several other Italian clubs, including Virtus Lanciano, Parma, and Sampdoria. However, his time at Lecce came to an abrupt end following the unsavoury incident with the Hallas Verona player, which the club deemed unacceptable.
As Lecce begins their search for a new manager, they will be hoping to find one who can guide them to safety and uphold the values of fair play that the club holds dear.
