May 23 (THEWILL) — Judith Chalmers, the TV presenter best known for hosting ITV’s travel show “Wish You Were Here…?”, died at 90 on Thursday, May 21.
ITV stands for Independent Television and is the United Kingdom’s oldest commercial television network, launched in 1955.
Her family said: “After living an extraordinary life that involved over 60 years in broadcasting and countless adventures all over the globe, Judy sadly passed away last night, surrounded by the family she loved so much after suffering with Alzheimer’s for some years. We will miss her greatly but she leaves behind a giant suitcase of the happiest of memories.”
Chalmers began broadcasting at age 13 on BBC North’s “Children’s Hour.” She later hosted programs including “Family Favourites”, “Woman’s Hour”, and “Come Dancing”, as well as ITV shows like “Good Afternoon.” She also presented “Miss World” and shows on BBC Radio 2.
She is best remembered for “Wish You Were Here…?”, which she hosted from 1974 to 2003, taking viewers to holiday destinations around the world.
An ITV spokesperson said: “Judith Chalmers became one of the most beloved faces of British broadcasting. Her contribution to TV made her a national treasure, and we send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.”
Chalmers was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1994, an honor given by the British monarchy to recognize outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, charity, or public service.
She was married to sports presenter, Neil Durden-Smith, for more than 60 years and is survived by their two children, including TV presenter, Mark Durden-Smith, and six grandchildren.
