April 01, (THEWILL) – Barcelona took a step closer to lifting another La Liga title with a comfortable 4-0 win over bottom-placed Elche.
Robert Lewandowski was the hero for Barcelona, scoring twice, with Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres also getting on the scoresheet. While it was not a vintage display from Xavi’s side, the gap in quality between the two teams ensured that the result was never in doubt.
Elche started brightly, but soon retreated and sat deep in an attempt to frustrate Barcelona, managing to keep them at bay for the first 19 minutes. However, it was only a matter of time before the first goal arrived, with Lewandowski firing home after being set up by Ronald Araujo’s free-kick.
Although Elche enjoyed some nice spells of possession thereafter, the hosts failed to threaten the Barcelona goal and Fati made it three with a strike of individual quality that gave Edgar Badia in the Elche goal no chance. Lewandowski tripled their lead with a headed effort six minutes after the hour mark and Torres added a fourth.
Next up for Barcelona is their Copa del Rey semi-final clash with Real Madrid, while Elche face Osasuna in their next La Liga fixture.
