May 31, (THEWILL) – Liverpool chairman Tom Werner wants an apology from Amelie Oudea-Castera, France’s sports minister after she blamed the club and their fans for obtaining fraudulent tickets that resulted in the pandemonium outside the Stade de France before and during the Champions League final on Saturday.
Kickoff was delayed due to tumultuous scenes at the stadium, including allegations of ticket turnstiles closing hours before kick-off and police pepper-spraying people, including children, as they attempted to get entry.
According to Oudea-Castera, the first issue that prompted the back-up was Liverpool fans with false tickets, while interior minister Gerald Darmanin claimed there had been a “massive ticket scam.”
Liverpool chairman Werner responded angrily to Oudea-assertions Castera’s in a letter to her on Monday, lamenting the “security catastrophe” in Paris.
He wrote: “I am writing to you today out of utter disbelief that a Minister of the French Government, in a position of enormous responsibility and influence, could make a series of unproven pronouncements on a matter of such significance before a proper, formal, independent investigation process has even taken place.”
He queried the very disastrous organisation of the event which endangered the lives of many Reds’ fans. He demanded an apology and hoped that an open and independent investigation be carried out. UEFA has already indicated that an impartial investigation into the turbulent scenes surrounding the match will be conducted.
