Diego Jota
April 03, (THEWILL) – Liverpool extended their lead atop the English Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 victory over local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Wednesday. The win restored their 12-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal in the 2024/2025 title race.
Diogo Jota proved decisive for the home side, scoring the only goal of the contest in the 57th minute. The Portuguese forward finished neatly after connecting with Luis Diaz’s clever flick, giving Liverpool their 100th victory over Everton across all competitions.
Everton had opportunities to score during the match, with Beto having a goal disallowed for offside in the 20th minute. The forward also struck the post later in the game after breaking through on goal, but was unable to find an equaliser against Arne Slot’s league leaders.
The defeat marked the end of a strong run for Everton, who had gone nine league matches without losing prior to their visit to Anfield. Despite their improved form in recent weeks, the result leaves them in 15th position in the standings.
Arsenal had temporarily reduced Liverpool’s lead at the summit to nine points following their win against Fulham on Tuesday, but this latest victory for the Reds reestablished their commanding position as they continue their impressive campaign under Slot.
